Our Campus
Our North Carolina Campus
Several years ago, the Board and Administration of Southmountain established a plan to replace the outdated, inefficient dormitories—two of which dated back to the 1930s. Their idea was to develop a community of homes where children could live in normal family situations but still enjoy the benefits that institutional care provides. Resources such as immediate support by clinicians, recreation and cultural resource activities and facilities in which to enjoy them, an on-campus school, and the ability to live among peers who understand where you have been, are all benefits of a large facility like Southmountain Children’s Homes. In order to keep these benefits and improve the living situations at the same time, a plan was devised to create a neighborhood of individual homes on land behind the old facilities. This land, which used to be farmed by the children in care, made the perfect spot for the new residential community.
Over the last decade, eight homes have been constructed in this neighborhood and each is a beautiful, warm, friendly, and efficient home. Additionally, within the past decade, Southmountain has constructed new facilities for recreation and cultural activities. The Kate B. Reynolds Center houses a theater, gym, swimming pool, ceramics and woodworking shops, and the Fred Boyd Education Center. Additionally, the 50-ft. Alpine Tower and the low rescue/team building course allow the children, as well as families and community or corporate groups, to develop feelings of self-worth, trust, accomplishment, and unity.
